san elijo state park

One of the many, many awesome things about living in San Diego is having access to beachfront camping. San Elijo State Beach is about 30 minutes northwest from my house, and I love staying a few days, getting sand in all my crevices, and maybe learning to surf. I could do without the train horn every hour all night, but it’s nice to be close to breweries and an amazing donut shop. This winter, my friends took their RV up for a night, so I went to visit for a few hours. I was amazed when we hit the beach…

Another favorite spot I take friends is Torrey Pines Natural Reserve. After patiently waiting for a free parking spot to open up along the popular beach, we ascend the winding road up the mountain, then meander around trails that overlook the ocean. But the best part for both my guests and for me? The descent to Torrey Pines Beach, where we pick up rocks, test the chilly waters, and take selfies.

When a friend from middle school told me he was planning a trip to San Diego just before Christmas — and that he’d never been here before — I tried to see my city from an outsider’s perspective. What would make the biggest splash? It was more happenstance than planning that made us end up at the harbor at sunset (just after he landed! Kismet!). I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to give him to my fair city.
