Photo Friday: Olive Oil in Sardinia

We buy olive oil at the store here. But if you’re lucky enough to own olive trees in Sardinia, you can take your olive harvest to a plant like this one to have them turn it into viscous, green-gem olive oil.

I was fascinated with the process. The olives are dumped into one machine that takes them up a little olive escalator. They’re sorted then moved to another machine that pulverizes them.  All along, the olives are tracked with the owner’s names. Heaven forbid the olive streams cross!

The end result is these ginormous plastic containers filled with product from your own land. Lorella and Gianni, the owners of the Agriturismo I stayed at, graciously gave me a tin of my own oil from their batch.
